A judge can release a jury from a case before they reach a verdict in a few situations. If a juror gets sick or something unexpected happens that makes it impossible to continue, the judge can send the jury home. Both sides in the case can also agree to end jury deliberations early.

The other main reason a judge would dismiss a jury is if they simply can't reach a decision. If the jury has been deliberating for a while and the judge becomes convinced they're deadlocked with no real chance of agreeing, the judge can call it off and discharge them. This is sometimes called a "hung jury" situation. When this happens, the case isn't necessarily over. It often means the case may need to be tried again in front of a new jury.
