§ 72 Affirmation.

If you have to take an oath in court but object to swearing an oath for religious or personal reasons, you can make an affirmation instead. An affirmation is simply a formal promise to tell the truth, without using the word "swear" or invoking a higher power.

This affirmation carries the exact same legal weight as an oath. Whether you swear an oath or make an affirmation, you are equally bound to tell the truth, and you can face the same penalties for lying either way. The court cannot force you to take a religious oath if you have genuine objections to doing so.
