§ 926 Costs where defendant disclaims.

If you're sued over land or property but you tell the court you don't actually claim any ownership or interest in it, you shouldn't have to pay for the lawsuit. The person who sued you would normally have to cover your court costs since you weren't really fighting them over the property in the first place.

There's an exception, though. A judge can decide not to award you costs if there's a good reason to rule differently. This gives courts some flexibility in cases where making the other side pay your costs wouldn't be fair, even though you disclaimed interest in the property.

This rule mainly protects people who get pulled into a property dispute they don't actually have a stake in. If you make it clear early on that you're not claiming any rights to the property, this rule helps make sure you're not stuck paying for a fight that wasn't really yours.
