§ 1111.1 Return of operator's license.

If you used your driver's license as a way to pay bail instead of cash, the court clerk has to give it back to you once certain things happen. This applies when someone gets arrested and doesn't have cash on hand, so they leave their license with the court as a kind of deposit.

You get your license back in three situations. First, if you write a personal check for the bail amount and the court collects the money from that check, you get your license back. Second, if you show up to court to answer the charge against you or to post a regular bond, you get your license back. Third, if you decide to plead guilty and send the cash bail amount to the court clerk instead of showing up in person, you also get your license back.

Basically, this rule makes sure people aren't stuck without their driver's license any longer than necessary. Once you've handled your bail obligation in one of these approved ways, the court can't hold onto your license anymore.
