If a jury decides that a defendant is mentally sane, the criminal case keeps moving forward like normal. This means the trial can continue, or if the trial already happened, the judge can go ahead and hand down a sentence.

This rule comes into play when someone raises a question about a defendant's mental state, often before or during a trial. Once the jury looks at the evidence and decides the person is sane, there's no more reason to pause the case for that issue. The court simply picks up where things left off, whether that means starting or continuing the trial, or moving straight to sentencing if a conviction already happened.

This rule matters because it keeps cases from getting stuck. Without it, a sanity question could delay justice indefinitely. Once the sanity issue is resolved and the jury says the person is fit, the legal process continues just as it would for anyone else.
