Before police can get a search warrant, they have to prove to a judge that there's a good reason to believe a crime happened and that evidence will be found in a specific place. This proof has to be written down in a sworn statement called an affidavit.

The warrant can't be vague. It must clearly name or describe the person involved, and it must spell out exactly what property police are looking for and exactly which place they plan to search. This means police can't get a warrant just to search anywhere or take anything they want. They have to tell the judge specifically what they're looking for and where they expect to find it.

This rule protects people from random or overly broad searches. It makes sure judges only approve warrants when there's real evidence behind the request, not just a guess or a hunch.
