§ 1326 Receipts for property taken from defendant.

When police arrest someone and take their money or property, they have to give the person a written receipt right away. This receipt needs to clearly list what was taken, whether it's cash, a specific amount, or other items of property.

The officer actually has to make two copies of this receipt. One copy goes to the person who was arrested, or to the jail staff who will be holding that person's belongings. The other copy stays with the police department, filed with the officer's supervisor or chief.

This rule exists to protect people from having their belongings lost or taken without any record. It creates a paper trail showing exactly what property was taken and confirms the police are accountable for it while the person is in custody.
