When a grand jury forms, its members have to pick one person from the group to act as clerk. That person's job is to keep written notes of what happens during the grand jury's meetings.

The clerk writes down the evidence that gets presented to the jury. But there are two things the clerk does not record: how each individual juror votes stays private, and this rule doesn't require detailed transcripts of testimony beyond the evidence itself. This keeps a record of the process while still protecting the privacy of how each juror decided to vote.
