§ 466 Name of defendant.

When someone is charged with a crime and brought before the court for arraignment, the judge must tell them something important about their name. If the name listed in the charging papers isn't actually their real name, they need to speak up right then and say what their true name is.

If the person doesn't correct their name at this point, the case will simply move forward using whatever name appears on the indictment or information (the official charging documents). In other words, this is the person's chance to fix the record if the name is wrong. Once this moment passes, the court will continue treating them as the name written in the paperwork, whether or not it's accurate.

This rule exists to make sure the court has correct information early on and to give the defendant a clear opportunity to speak up about their identity before the case proceeds.
