§ 492 Pleading to indictment or information.

When someone is charged with a crime, they have to respond to the formal charges against them. This can happen right away, or on a later day if the court gave them extra time to prepare.

The person facing charges has three options for how to respond. They can ask the court to throw out the charges completely. They can file a demurrer, which basically argues that even if everything in the charges is true, it doesn't actually add up to a crime. Or they can enter a plea, like guilty or not guilty, to move the case forward.

This rule just sets up the basic steps someone follows after being formally charged. It gives them a chance to challenge the charges before the case goes any further, instead of forcing them straight into a plea.
