If you're picked as a possible juror in a criminal case, either side can object to you serving on the jury. There are two ways this can happen.

The first is called a peremptory challenge. This lets a lawyer remove you from the jury without giving any reason. Each side only gets a limited number of these, so they can't use them on every juror.

The second is called a challenge for cause. This happens when a lawyer has a specific reason to think you can't be fair. Maybe you know someone involved in the case, or you've already formed an opinion about it. If the judge agrees there's a good reason, you'll be removed from the jury. Unlike peremptory challenges, there's no limit on how many times a lawyer can raise a challenge for cause, as long as they have a real reason each time.
