When both sides run out of reasons to challenge a juror for cause (meaning they can't show the juror is biased or unfit to serve), they still get another option. Each side can remove a juror without giving any reason at all. This is called a peremptory challenge.

The prosecution (the state) gets to use this option first, then the defendant gets their turn. Both sides only have a limited number of these no-reason challenges to use during jury selection. Once a side uses up all of their peremptory challenges, they can't use any more, even if they still have concerns about a juror.

This rule matters because it gives both sides a way to shape the jury beyond just proving bias. Lawyers often use these challenges based on gut instinct, body language, or other factors that don't rise to the level of proving someone can't be fair. But once the limited number runs out, both sides have to accept the remaining jurors on the panel.
