§ 962 Time for pronouncing verdict specified.

If you're found guilty, the judge doesn't sentence you right away. The court has to wait at least two days after the verdict before handing down your sentence, as long as court is still in session during that time.

If the court session is ending soon and there isn't enough time to wait two full days, the judge has to schedule your sentencing as far out as reasonably possible. This gives you and your lawyer time to prepare, look over the case, and file any motions you might need before sentencing happens.
