Rule 3.9 Service as Arbitrator or Mediator

Judges cannot moonlight as arbitrators or mediators outside of their official court work. They also can't step outside their normal role to perform other judge-like duties on the side. The only exception is when a law specifically allows it.

This rule keeps judges focused on their actual court cases and prevents confusion about when someone is acting as an official judge versus taking on a side job. It also stops judges from using their title or position to build a private business resolving disputes outside the courtroom. If a judge wants to help settle disagreements outside their regular duties, they need clear legal permission to do so first.
