§ 137.175 Judgment in criminal action that effects release of defendant; delivery to sheriff

When a judge issues a ruling that means a defendant gets released right away, whether that's because the case is dismissed, the person is put on probation, or they're given credit for time already served, the court has to act quickly to make that release happen properly. The court must send a copy of the judgment to the sheriff within three days after it's entered.

This rule exists so that people don't sit in jail longer than they should after a judge has already decided they should be released. The sheriff needs official paperwork to know that someone is supposed to be let go, and this rule sets a clear deadline for the court to send it. Three calendar days means all days count, not just business days, so weekends and holidays don't extend the deadline.
