§ 147.135 Processing compensation application; order; contents

When someone applies for crime victim compensation, the Department of Justice has to review the application and then issue a written decision. This decision covers two things.

First, the department writes down what it found based on the application. This means they list the facts they reviewed and relied on to make their decision. Second, the department states whether the person qualifies for compensation under the state's victim compensation laws. This is a clear yes or no answer on whether money will be paid out.

This rule makes sure applicants get a clear, official answer instead of being left guessing. It also creates a paper trail. If someone disagrees with the decision, having the department's written findings and conclusion gives them something concrete to point to if they want to challenge it later.
