§ 40.455 Rule 802. Hearsay rule

Hearsay is when someone repeats a statement made outside of court to prove that the statement is true. This rule says courts generally will not allow hearsay as evidence in a case.

There are exceptions, though. Other rules in this same section of Oregon law list specific situations where hearsay can be used. Some other laws outside this section can also allow it. So if a statement counts as hearsay, it gets blocked from evidence unless it fits one of these allowed exceptions.

For someone involved in a case, this means you cannot just tell the court what another person said and expect the judge to accept it as proof. You would need to find a legal exception that applies, or bring in the original person to testify directly about what they saw or know.
