Judges have to make decisions based on the law and the facts of the case, not based on outside pressure. This means a judge can't change a ruling because of public opinion, media criticism, or fear of backlash. Even if a case is unpopular or controversial, the judge is supposed to stick to what the law requires.
Judges also can't let personal relationships or interests affect their decisions on the bench. This includes family ties, friendships, political connections, or financial interests. A judge is supposed to set these things aside and rule fairly, without favoritism.
Finally, judges can't let anyone create the impression that they have special access or influence over the judge. This means a judge shouldn't allow friends, family members, donors, or anyone else to suggest they can get special treatment or sway the judge's decisions. The goal is to make sure everyone believes the court is fair and that no one gets an unfair advantage because of who they know.
