Rule 4.1 Activities in General

This rule sets limits on what judges can do outside of their courtroom work. Judges can have hobbies, join groups, and take part in community life just like anyone else. But they need to be careful about how these activities might affect their job as a judge.

A judge should not get involved in anything that gets in the way of doing their job well. This means outside activities cannot take up so much time or energy that the judge's court work suffers. Judges also need to watch out for activities that would force them to step aside from cases too often. If a judge's outside involvement means they constantly have to remove themselves from hearing certain types of cases, that becomes a problem for the court system.

The rule also protects the public's trust in judges. A judge should avoid activities that would make people reasonably doubt the judge's fairness or honesty. Even if a judge feels they can stay objective, they need to think about how their actions would look to others. The goal is to make sure judges remain independent, trustworthy, and unbiased in both appearance and reality.
