Rule 6.4 Law Reform Activities Affecting Client Interests

Lawyers are allowed to get involved in groups that work on changing laws or improving how the legal system works, even if those changes might end up helping one of their clients. Being active in law reform work is treated separately from representing individual clients.

The only catch is honesty about conflicts. If a lawyer knows that a decision they're helping make could specifically benefit one of their clients, they have to speak up and let others in the organization know about that connection. However, the lawyer does not have to reveal who the client actually is. This keeps things transparent without forcing the lawyer to break client confidentiality.

Basically, this rule lets lawyers wear two hats: one as an advocate for legal reform and one as a client representative. It just makes sure that when those two roles might overlap in a way that looks like a conflict, the lawyer flags it so the organization can decide how to handle it.
