Rule 1.210 Application of UTCR to Licensed Paralegals

If a licensed paralegal is representing someone in court, the same trial court rules that apply to attorneys also apply to that paralegal. This means anywhere these rules mention "attorney," you should read that as including licensed paralegals too, as long as they are working within the limits set by the Oregon Supreme Court Rules for Licensing Paralegals.

There are two exceptions to keep in mind. If the situation or context makes it clear the rule only applies to attorneys, then it does not extend to paralegals. Also, if a specific rule says otherwise, that rule's own language takes priority.

In short, licensed paralegals who represent clients must follow the same standards and procedures that attorneys follow under these trial court rules, within the scope of what they're licensed to do.
