Rule 1920.3 Commencement of Action

To start a divorce case in Pennsylvania, you must file a complaint with the prothonotary. The prothonotary is the clerk who handles civil court paperwork at your local courthouse.

This is the official first step in the divorce process. Nothing else you do counts as starting the case until you file that complaint.
