Rule 201 Agreements of Attorneys

When lawyers on opposite sides of a case make any kind of agreement about how the case will be handled, they need to put it in writing. This protects everyone involved by creating a clear record of what was agreed to.

There is one exception: if lawyers make an agreement while court is actually in session, it does not have to be in writing as long as the court clerk or the court reporter writes it down in their official records.
