Rule 1008 Contents of Notice of Appeal or Petition for Certiorari

When someone wants to appeal a criminal case from a lower court to the Court of Common Pleas in Pennsylvania, they must file a written notice. This notice has to clearly state whether they are filing a notice of appeal or asking for a writ of certiorari, which are two different ways to ask a higher court to review a case.

The notice must include four basic pieces of information: the defendant's name and address, the date the sentence was given, the specific charges the defendant was convicted of, and the name of the judge who handed down the sentence. Leaving out any of these details could cause problems with the appeal.
