Rule 604 Interpreters

If someone needs an interpreter in court, that interpreter has to be qualified to do the job. This works the same way as when a court decides if an expert witness knows enough about a subject to testify. The judge has to be satisfied that the interpreter can actually translate accurately before letting them help out.

The interpreter also has to take an oath or make a formal promise before they start. This means they are swearing to translate honestly and correctly, without changing or leaving out what someone actually said. This matters because a bad or dishonest translation could change the outcome of a case, especially if a witness or defendant does not speak English well.

Basically, this rule makes sure that anyone translating in court is both capable and trustworthy. It protects people who need language help by making sure their words are translated the right way.
