Rule 702 Testimony by Experts

When a case involves something too technical or complicated for the average person to understand on their own, courts allow expert witnesses to help explain it. This could involve scientific findings, medical issues, technical processes, or other specialized subjects that jurors or judges need help understanding.

To testify as an expert, a person needs to show they actually have the background for it. This can come from their education, job experience, training, or specific skills they've developed over time. There's no single path to becoming an expert. Someone can qualify through years of hands-on work just as easily as through a degree.

Once a witness is qualified as an expert, they get more freedom than regular witnesses. They can share their opinions about the evidence and explain what it means, not just state plain facts. This helps judges and juries make sense of complicated evidence they might not understand otherwise.
