Rule 16 Continuing Jurisdiction

If you file a case in family court, the court keeps authority over that case and the people involved from the moment the summons and complaint are officially served. This means the court doesn't lose its power to make decisions just because time has passed or the case has moved through different stages.

This matters because family court cases often need follow up action, like changing child support, custody, or alimony after the original order is made. Since the court's authority continues, you don't have to start a brand new case every time something needs to be adjusted. The same court that handled the original case can handle these later requests too.

This also means both sides stay accountable to that court until the case is fully resolved or the court's involvement formally ends. You can't simply ignore the court's authority once the case has started, and the other party can bring matters back before the same court if issues come up later.
