If you win a court judgment against someone but they haven't paid you, you can use the discovery process to find out about their money and property. This means you can ask them questions, request documents, or use other discovery tools to figure out what assets they have, so you can collect what you're owed.
The same discovery rules that apply earlier in a lawsuit (Rules 26 through 37) apply here too, with one exception. Rule 35, which deals with ordering someone to get a physical or mental examination, does not apply. That kind of exam doesn't make sense in this situation since you're trying to collect money, not prove an injury or medical condition.
In short, this rule lets the winning party dig into the losing party's finances to track down assets and get paid, using most of the same tools available during the rest of the case.
