Rule 50 Scheduling Cases

Courts need to set up a clear system for scheduling trials. This gives judges and court staff a plan for deciding when cases will be heard, instead of handling things randomly.

When a court handles both civil and criminal cases, criminal cases usually get scheduled first whenever possible. This means someone's criminal charge typically won't sit on the back burner while civil lawsuits move forward.

Some criminal cases jump ahead of others in line. If a defendant is sitting in jail waiting for trial, their case gets priority over cases where the defendant is out on bail. The same goes for defendants who the court believes might pose a danger or risk if left free before trial. The idea is that people who are locked up, or who might cause problems while released, shouldn't have to wait as long as everyone else to get their day in court.
