Rule 6.4 Law Reform Activities Affecting Client Interests

Lawyers are allowed to be part of groups that work on changing or improving laws, like bar associations or reform organizations, even if a client's interests might be affected by the changes these groups push for. Being active in law reform work is treated differently from ordinary legal representation, so a lawyer doesn't have to avoid this kind of involvement just because a client happens to have a stake in the outcome.

That said, there's one important requirement. If a lawyer knows that a decision made by the organization could clearly help one of their clients, the lawyer has to speak up and say so. The lawyer must let others in the organization know about this potential benefit, but doesn't have to name the actual client. This keeps things honest and transparent, so other members of the group know when a lawyer's vote or input might be influenced by outside interests, without forcing the lawyer to break client confidentiality.
