Rule 32 Term of the Chief Justice

The Tennessee Supreme Court has five justices, and they choose one of their own to be Chief Justice. This choice is made by majority vote among the justices themselves, not by voters or the governor.

The Chief Justice serves a four-year term that starts on September 1. There's no limit on how many times someone can be re-elected to this position, as long as they keep getting votes from their fellow justices for additional two-year terms after the first four years.

If something goes seriously wrong, three of the five justices can vote to remove the Chief Justice from that role before their term ends. This gives the court a way to make a leadership change if there's a good reason for it, without needing outside approval.
