Rule 5 Fees in Civil Cases

If you are filing documents with an appeals court in a civil case, you must pay the required filing fees right when you turn in your paperwork. You cannot wait until later to pay.

Some people do not have to pay these fees. If a law or court rule excuses you from paying, you can skip this step. One common example is if you qualify to file as someone who cannot afford court costs.

If you do not follow this rule, the appeals court has the power to take action against you. The court can issue whatever order it thinks is fair to handle the situation.
