Rule 227 Challenge to Juror

When picking a jury, lawyers can object to having a specific person serve as a juror. There are two ways to do this: a "challenge for cause," which means the lawyer has a specific reason why that person should not serve, or a "peremptory challenge," which allows a lawyer to remove a juror without giving a reason.

The judge must rule on these objections quickly. If the judge agrees with the challenge, that person is removed from the jury for that case. Lawyers can make these objections out loud during the jury selection process.
