Rule 24 Duty of Clerk

When you file your lawsuit papers at the courthouse, the clerk has specific jobs to do with those papers. The clerk must write the case number on your petition, along with the exact date and time you turned it in. The clerk also signs the papers with their official signature.

This process creates an official record of when your case was started. That date and time can matter later if there are any questions about deadlines or the order in which cases were filed.
