Rule 288 Court Open for Jury

While the jury is in another room working on their decision, the judge does not have to sit and wait. The judge can hear other cases or take breaks during that time.

Even so, the court is still considered fully open and available for anything related to the jury's case. If something comes up, like a jury question or a verdict, the judge must be ready to handle it right away.
