If you signed a check, promissory note, or other financial document as an endorser or assignor (meaning you passed it along or guaranteed it), you can be sued over that document. The person who originally owed the money is called the "principal obligor," and you can be sued together with them or separately, depending on the situation.

Texas law and the Business and Commerce Code spell out exactly when someone in this position can be sued alone versus alongside the main borrower or signer. The key point is that just because you were not the main person responsible for the debt does not mean you are off the hook from a lawsuit.
