Art. 2A.109 ASSISTANCE OF TEXAS RANGERS IN CERTAIN CASES

When a local prosecutor is dealing with a case where an elected official is accused of a crime that would require sex offender registration if the person is convicted, the prosecutor can ask the Texas Rangers for help. This help can include investigating the case, providing technical support, or handling administrative tasks.

This rule exists because investigating an elected official can be tricky for local police. The elected official might have influence over the same police department that would normally handle the case. Bringing in the Texas Rangers, who work for the state and not the local government, helps keep the investigation fair and independent.

This only applies to specific situations. The person accused must be an elected officer in the area the local police department serves. The crime must also be serious enough that a conviction would require the person to register as a sex offender under Texas law.
