Rule 102 Purpose

The goal of Texas evidence rules is simple: help courts find the truth and reach fair outcomes. The rules are meant to keep cases moving without wasting time or money.

When a judge has to decide how to apply an evidence rule, they should choose the interpretation that is fair to everyone and gets to the truth. No interpretation should create unnecessary problems or slow things down for no good reason.
