Rule 106 Remainder of or Related Writings or Recorded Statements

When one side in a case reads or shows part of a document or recording, the other side has the right to immediately share other parts of that same document. They can also bring in a separate document if it connects closely enough that the full picture should be seen together.

This rule stops one side from cherry-picking only the parts of a document that help them while hiding the rest. For example, if someone reads only one paragraph from a letter, the other side can make sure the judge or jury also hears the paragraphs that give it more context. This rule applies to depositions as well.
