Rule 604 Interpreter

If someone needs an interpreter in court, that person cannot just be anyone who speaks the language. The interpreter must be qualified, meaning they need to have the skills and knowledge to translate accurately in a legal setting.

The interpreter also must take an oath or make a formal promise to translate honestly and correctly. This is the same kind of promise witnesses make when they swear to tell the truth. The oath holds the interpreter responsible for giving an accurate translation throughout the court proceedings.
