Rule 703 Bases of an Expert’s Opinion Testimony

When an expert witness gives an opinion in court, they can base it on different types of information. They can use facts they personally saw, facts they were told about, or data they reviewed before testifying.

The information the expert relies on does not have to be the kind of evidence that could normally be shown in court. As long as other experts in the same field would typically use that type of information to form their opinions, the expert's opinion can still be accepted by the court.
