Rule 1 Scope and Purpose

These rules apply to civil cases handled in the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands. In other words, if you're involved in a lawsuit that isn't a criminal case, these are the rules that guide how the case moves through court. There are some exceptions, though. Other rules from the Supreme Court, or specific laws, might apply instead in certain situations.

The main goal behind these rules is simple: cases should be handled fairly, quickly, and without unnecessary expense. Judges and everyone involved in a case, including the parties and their lawyers, are expected to follow the rules with this goal in mind. This means courts should avoid delays or procedures that make cases drag on longer or cost more than they need to.
