Rule 57 Declaratory Judgment

When you want a court to simply declare your legal rights or clear up a dispute about what the law means for your situation, you can ask for what's called a declaratory judgment. This rule explains that you follow the normal civil case rules to ask for one, and if you want a jury to decide any factual questions involved, you follow the standard jury demand process just like in any other case.

One important point: you don't lose your right to ask for a declaratory judgment just because you might have another way to solve your legal problem, like suing for money damages. The court can still decide to clear up your legal rights even if other options exist.
