Here's what this rule means for people in small claims court.
You can represent yourself in a small claims case. You do not need a lawyer, and many people go through the whole process without one. If you want a lawyer, you can hire one, but that lawyer must be licensed to practice law in Utah.
If you are a business or organization, you can have an employee speak for you in court. This means a company does not always need to send an owner or manager. A regular employee can handle the case instead.
There is one more option. Sometimes another person can represent you, like a family member or friend, even if they are not a lawyer or employee. But the judge has to approve this ahead of time, and that person cannot be paid for helping you. This option gives people some flexibility when they need help but cannot afford or do not want a lawyer.
