Plain-English Summary (for reference only — not a substitute for the rule text above)
This summary is not the rule. The rule text controls.
Before anyone can speak as a witness in a Virginia court, they must make a formal promise to tell the truth. This promise can be a religious oath or a non-religious affirmation, depending on what the person is comfortable with.
The point of this requirement is to make sure the witness understands that telling the truth is a serious duty. The wording used should be meaningful enough to make the witness think carefully about their responsibility to be honest.
