Rule 1:22 Exercise of Challenges to Prospective Jurors

When lawyers want to remove a juror "for cause," meaning they have a specific reason why that juror cannot be fair, they must be allowed to make that argument away from the other jurors. This protects the process so the rest of the jury panel does not hear the reasons one of their members is being questioned or removed.

This rule is short but protects both sides in a case. If a judge does not allow lawyers this private opportunity, it could be grounds to challenge how the trial was handled.
