Rule 610 Religious Beliefs or Opinions

A witness's religious beliefs, or lack of them, can't be used in court to make them seem more or less believable. Lawyers cannot bring up someone's faith, or the fact that they don't practice a religion, to try to convince the judge or jury that the person is honest or dishonest.

This rule keeps religion out of the discussion when it comes to judging whether a witness is telling the truth. A person's credibility has to be judged based on other things, like what they say, how consistent their story is, or other evidence in the case. Their personal religious views simply aren't relevant to whether they're being truthful on the witness stand.
