The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals picks who serves on the Judicial Investigation Commission. This applies to all members except the Chairperson, who is chosen through a different process.

Once someone joins the Commission, they don't just start working right away. They have to go through a training program within their first six months on the job. The Office of Disciplinary Counsel runs this orientation to make sure new members understand how the process works before they start handling cases.
