Rule 20.01 Generally

If you're being sued, you normally have a set amount of time to file an answer or other response to the complaint. This rule says that the person suing you (the plaintiff) and you (the defendant) can agree to give you more time to respond, without needing to ask the judge first, unless the court has already said otherwise.

If a defendant signs onto this kind of agreement, it counts as officially showing up in the case. This matters because it means the defendant can't later claim they were never properly involved or notified.

One important thing to know: agreeing to extend your response deadline does not push back any other deadlines in the case. Other dates set by court rules or by the judge stay the same, even if you get more time to answer the complaint.
