If a small claims case runs into a situation that these small claims rules don't cover, the court can use the regular Alabama Rules of Civil Procedure instead. This only happens when it's needed to make sure the case is handled fairly.
The regular civil procedure rules are already adjusted for use in district court, so they fit with how small claims cases work. But they only step in when they don't clash with the small claims rules. In other words, the small claims rules always come first. The bigger set of civil rules just fills in the gaps when something isn't addressed.
This setup gives judges some flexibility. It means small claims court can still run in a simple, quick way, but judges have backup rules to rely on if an unusual issue comes up that the small claims rules don't clearly answer.
